New in Dribs 1.6: dividends and investment returns

Investment accounts now track dividends and realized gains, the chart can show your return, and transfers can repeat.

Dribs 1.6 is out. Most of it is for people who track investments in Dribs: dividends, realized gains, and a chart that can show your return as well as the value. Transfers can repeat now, and every account gets its own Siri shortcut.

Dividends

Log a dividend on a position, and Dribs books it as income in the account it was paid into, usually your broker's cash account. If you've been recording dividends as plain income all along, Find Past Dividends looks through your transactions for them and adds them to the right position, so there's nothing to type in again.

Realized gains, and a Return chart

Closed positions now show the gain or loss you locked in when you sold, most recently closed first. Under the account's chart, tiles show what you invested, your realized gains and your dividends for the period you're looking at.

The chart itself switches between Value and Return. Value is what the account is worth. Return is what your investments have earned: gains on paper, plus realized gains and dividends, not counting the money you paid in. If you add money every month, the value line climbs whatever the market does. The return line doesn't, which makes it the more honest of the two. The Investments card in Insights and the Investment Account widget can show Return too.

Repeating transfers

Expenses and income could already repeat. Now transfers can too, and they show up under Scheduled with the rest. A transfer from checking to savings on the day after payday is the simplest version, and it means the savings happen before the month has a chance to spend them.

Shortcuts & Siri

Settings has a new Shortcuts & Siri screen. It explains what you can do with Shortcuts, including how to log card payments automatically. Every account also has its own shortcut now: say "Log an expense to [account] in Dribs" and Siri asks for the amount.

Fixes

  • Siri and Shortcuts no longer drop or misread the decimals when they ask you for an amount.
  • A buy, sell or dividend paid from a cash account in another currency now posts in that account's currency.
  • Past days in an investment account's chart use that day's closing value.

Investment accounts, dividends and the Return chart are part of Dribs Pro. Repeating transfers and the new shortcuts work in the free version. The update is on the App Store now.
