Choosing a money app that fits how you work.

Personal finance apps differ less in features than in approach: some plan every dollar ahead, some import from your bank, some just help you keep an honest record. Here's how Dribs compares with two popular alternatives, YNAB and Cashew, based on each app's own published information.

Before you choose

Questions worth asking.

  • Will you enter transactions yourself? If not, you need an app with bank import. If you will, a manual tracker gives you more control and keeps your banking login to yourself.
  • Do you want a method, or a record? Zero-based budgeting asks you to plan ahead and works best when you follow it closely. A record-keeping app is lighter, but leaves the planning to you.
  • Where should your data live? On your device, in your own cloud account, or on the app maker's servers.
  • Which devices do you and your household use? An iPhone-only app won't work for a partner on Android.
  • How many currencies do you deal with? Some apps keep one currency per budget; others convert across accounts.
